Happy Thanksgiving!!!
We dodged a bullet from Mother Nature and thanks to the extra effort by the PGA pro at Running Deer, Dan Hoban, we put the results for event #5 of the current AWGL season into the books. Some pretty good numbers hit the scoreboard as 59 cool weather players toured the beautiful Running Deer layout. Best round of the day was carded by George Frake as the four time AWGL champion posted an even par 72 for the win in Open gross. The Moorestown Field Club PGA professional and GM combined nines of 37 & 35 for the winning total, which included four birdies…all of which were halved. Open second low gross went to Seaview pro, Cliff Still with 75. The pros kept winning as PGA pro Bob Issler from Pine Barrens GC in Tom’s River, NJ took Open net with a one under par 71, two shots ahead of John F. Byrne’s Rich Wade. Nice playing on the very demanding Running Deer course.
The Senior division (ages 50 to 65) saw some really close competition and Sean Cooke, playing out of Philly’s J.F. Byrne GC took low gross with 77. Close behind Sean was Philly fireman, Jim Babst from Five Ponds GC in Warminster, PA…and he was only one stroke behind at 78. Galloway Nat’l player, Mark Papineau had the best net score of the day as he paired his 15 handicap with a nice 81 for 66 and the low score in Senior net. Only two behind Mark was Patrick Baronsky and the DuPont CC linkster was in with a 4 under 68. Mark doubled down with the Senior Closest to Pin victory as his shot on #7 came to rest 15’ 2” from the flagstick.
Centerton GC’s Greg Van Meter lead the Super Senior gross with 74 on nines of 37 – 37 and was 3 ahead of Jon Mabry from the Moorestown FC who turned in a 77. SS low net went to Ray Fuller as he proved that local knowledge helps. The Running Deer player’s net 69 was tied by Harry Renwick from Pennsauken CC and the resulting playoff of handicaps gave the win to Ray….10 to 18. The Galloway Nat’l team produced another winner as Kevin Nepveux hit a great shot on hole #5 stopping only 6’ 7” from the cup and he pocketed Super Senior CTP $$$.
I got some good feedback from the players on the setup of the scoring categories and the majority favored the continuation of playing in divisions by age and not by handicap. The adjustment of tees in the Super Senior division where the 77 year olds & up will play the par 4’s & 5’s from the Red Tees was agreed to by the majority. Going forward, we’re going to stay on the same setup we’ve been using. We’re off for Thanksgiving this week and play will resume on December 6th at The Links GC in Marlton, NJ. The tee sheet is open and if you are planning to play, please text/email me. Pat, Al and I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving and wish you all the best!
